Work on the winkel (2) : call for cake photographs

Hi,

some of you may know me, Rita João and Pedro Ferreira (www.pedrita.net) have been working on a book about Portuguese Semi-Industrial Portuguese Bakery.
Sounds pretty exotic, and it is a bit, yes. But it's something we are very passionate about, and we'd like to share some of that with you.

Here's a short introduction:
Fabrico Próprio (means Own Production) will be an over 250-page book, a website, a workshop and so far 3 launches in Lisbon, London and Tokyo, all to take place in the Fall of 2007.
We have been working for just over 6 months, and are now looking for sponsorship.
There are over 30 people working on this project, most of them Portuguese, ranging from designers, to master bakers, chefs, writers, illustrators and photographers.

Why Cakes? When you ask a Portuguese what his or her favourite cake is, the answer is quick — even if you can always change your mind. We don’t make these cakes of our preference at home, and not even our mothers or grandmothers can bake them — we just don’t take that risk.
It’s not worth the effort, as we can trust the talent and mastery of the bakers who bring them to any counter or shop window of a cake shop or café, throughout the country, everyday. We also know always where to find them, and also to identify the real “urban myths” of the towns we live in, which offer us the biggest, the sweetest or simply the most delirious variations of these cakes.
Portuguese semi-industrial bakery is a unique component of our gastronomical heritage. Shapes and contents are replicated every night in tens of bakeries and small factories scattered over the country, always in the same way, in a perpetuation of a mould or recipe that we know nothing of, but that we recognise immediately.
It is also a phenomenon exclusive to our country; no other has such a richness in what we call “everyday bakery”. Unlike French and Central European “haute pâtisserie”, or exotic Asian specialities, there is nothing sophisticated about this bakery that feeds our days in Portugal. The recipes can be secret, but its results are widely available to all of us — from the finest traditional pâtisseries to high school bars, from train stations and airports to the corner café.

We'll have the www.fabricoproprio.pt website up and running very soon (waiting for domain clearance), but in the meantime we'd like to ask you to contribute to one of the sections of the book, which you can do it through our Flickr group:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/fabricoproprio

The section is called: Nata vs. Bolo de Arroz: The Diaspora
Here's a short description:
The most famous of the Portuguese cakes, the Pastel de Nata (Custard Tart), shows up everyday in counters and tables of thousands of people all over the World.
>From São Paulo to London, from Singapore to Maputo, how do all the incarnations, names and adulterations of this Portuguese icon reflect the original delicacy?
In the same way, how can we explain the fact we can find the Bolo de Arroz in cities such as Antwerp and Melbourne, always with the same wrapper, written in Portuguese?
Through a worldwide call of cake photographs, to be gathered in this Group, we want to find images from the largest amount of places on Earth where these cakes are sold, bought and eaten.
Please look out for Pastel de Nata and Bolo de Arroz in your city, photograph it and send it to our group. If you don't have a flickr account and don't feel like getting one (it's super easy!) you can just email the photo to me and I'll put it there, and credit it to you.

Please also check our Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/fabricoproprio/ for most of our research and cake endeavours.
If you would like to know more about our project please let us know.
Thanks and Sweet greetings from Lisbon

Frederico

PS: We are still looking for more sponsors for the book, and also launch host cities/partners, so if you know of any (or you are one) please tell us.

>> register on addictlab.com and upload the Cake photographs there. Frederico will be able to find them there.
